Hi Plant Friend!

My love for houseplants began like many others — during the pandemic. I was home with an infant and a toddler and I desperately needed something to keep me grounded, something to bring a little calm to my beautiful chaos.

I bought a fiddle leaf fig, not knowing it wasn’t a beginner-friendly plant. Fiddle leaf figs are known to be quite finicky, but I was determined to keep it alive, unlike my many failed attempts at a green thumb in the past. I put in hours of research and joined all the plant Facebook groups I could find. I loved caring for and nurturing my fiddle leaf fig and figuring out what it needed to thrive. So I bought a few more plants… and then some more… and then some more. Before I knew it, my house was a mini jungle!

My plant obsession led me into making my own planters and I soon launched a business, The Simply Rooted Mama, selling wall mounted propagation planters and providing plant education to new plant parents. My little pandemic hobby was no longer little and had transformed into something much more than I was expecting. I discovered that I enjoyed teaching others about plant care just as much as I do collecting houseplants.

What I found in caring for plants, was not just a hobby, but community. And I think that’s what I had been looking for all along. I believe that is why the hobby exploded during the pandemic. People were able to connect to one another and to nature during a time of isolation and anxiety. Plant people show up for one another. I don’t think I’ve met more kind and generous people.

My family experienced a house fire in July 2022 and were displaced for months while our home was being restored. The kindness the plant community showed my family and I was incredible. After the fire I had to downsize my plant collection so I offered them to the plant community at whatever price they were able to give. The generosity shown to my family was overwhelming and was so helpful as we were rebuilding.

In the midst of the chaos of a house fire and our life being completely uprooted I was presented with the opportunity arose to expand The Simply Rooted Mama and offer speciality plants in a retail space and eventually online. I knew it would be a lot, but I had to take a leap of faith. I knew that I had a wonderful community supporting and cheering me on.

When you walk into our store or visit us on social media, you will see that we focus on community and elevating one another. Our tag line is “rooting for you” and we do just that — in every sense of the meaning. We really are rooting for YOU. In all areas of your life. We just think houseplants add a little beauty to your already beautiful life.

PS — You will be happy to know my fiddle leaf fig is still alive and living his best life!

Rooting for you,

Kristin
